Welcome to the HP Community Forum.

There are several scan applications and the full driver printer software that can scan to PDF.

Some of the more common choices:

General Example Set - HP Smart - Windows - Scan > Document

HP Printer Home Page - References and Resources

Learn about your Printer - Solve Problems

“Things that are your printer”

When the website support page opens, Select (as available) a Category > Topic > Subtopic

NOTE: Content depends on device type and Operating System

Categories : Alerts, Access to the Print and Scan Doctor (Windows), Warranty Check, HP Drivers / Software / Firmware Updates, How-to Videos, Bulletins/Notices, Lots of How-to Documents, Troubleshooting, Manuals > User Guides, Product Information (Specifications), Supplies, and more

Thank you Dragon-Fur, that solved my problem. And thank you for all the documentation. I must say that, being a Mac user since I purchased my first computer back in the late 90s I find Microsoft software to be unreliable and the instructions invariably unnecessarily complex .

My previous Brother Printer gave few problems and if so were easily resolved. I'm thinking of returning my HP printer and getting one I can trust.

You are welcome.

True - HP printers that lack a text-input capable control panel are meant to be controlled primarily with a phone, tablet, HP Smart (Windows, MacOS, Mobile), or the full driver software available in Windows.

Options and Features are model dependent -- some of what seems difficult, overly complicated, or unsupported on one printer might be easy and perhaps even automated on another.

If you decide to keep the printer, consider installing the Full Feature Software / full driver printer software. What? Full driver provides access to the printer features and supports printing and scanning from other programs and applications.

Good to have options, I think.
